Rice Township Wrong Way Crash Injuries Family of 7
Rice Township, PA (August 28, 2017) – A car traveling in the wrong lane of Aleksander Boulevard has plowed into a total of seven pedestrians on a residential street Friday afternoon. Five of the people injured in the crash were children.
According to the police report, the incident took place around 1 p.m. August 25 in the Mountain Top area near Wilkes-Barre. A witness said the collision took place outside the home of an emergency room doctor. Before first responders arrived, the doctor treated the victims, including a baby who was in a stroller.
The crash sent five of the victims to Geisinger Medical Center in Danville via helicopter. Two of the victims, Tyler and Caden Herbst, were already treated and have been released from the hospital. Those who remain in critical condition include 38-year-old Nina Herbst, 35-year-old Bryan Herbst, 5-year-old Ella Herbst, and 10-month-old Tessa Herbst. A cousin of the family, 8-year-old Gabrielle Carlin is in fair condition.
The driver of the vehicle has been identified as 51-year-old Jigna J. Kyada, of Mountain Top. She was not injured in the crash. Kyada is under the custody of the police.
The cause of the crash is still being investigated.
