South Heidelberg Township, PA (August 4, 2018) On Saturday morning, around 10:30 a.m., a collision occurred on Sportsman Road and Penn Avenue. The accident involved three vehicles and five people. Apparently, a police officer traveled westbound on Route 422 in response to an aggravated assault, when he hit a vehicle with two people inside. Their names were James Cooling and Michele Cooling. The impact from the first collision pushed the Cooling’s vehicle into a third vehicle that belonged to Paul McCoy and Mary Lynn McCoy. Unfortunately, the Cooling couple suffered fatal injuries from the collision. The EMS transported the McCoy couple to Reading Hospital. The police officer also went to the hospital.
Investigators are currently determining the cause of the accident and who is liable.
Unfortunately, fatal multi-vehicle accidents occur more than they should. The top reason for car collisions is distracted driving, which is a form of negligent driving. Using a cell phone, speeding, driving under the influence, programming a GPS, and falling asleep at the wheel are also forms of negligence. A minor distraction can change someone’s life forever, as it did with the Cooling couple. Once investigators determine who is liable and at fault, the Cooling’s loved ones can pursue a wrongful death lawsuit. Nobody should have to undergo the pain that comes with losing a loved one. If the police officer is responsible for the accident, then he should cover all funeral expenses.
Because the McCoy couple is suffering injuries, they could file a personal injury lawsuit with the help of a personal injury lawyer in order to receive compensation for their injuries.
