Motorcycle DUI Fatal Accident (December 12, 2017) On Monday a Hamburg man was charged in a motorcycle DUI fatal accident that occurred in Upper Macungie Township on Route 222 near Mill Creek Road this past July.
The accident involved gross negligence by the driver of the motorcycle who has been charged as a result of the accident. A report from Reading Eagle said that the couple riding on the motorcycle were Shawn Balthaser, age 49 and Yvonne Rohrback, age 52. They were in a relationship and living together and Ms. Rohrback died at the scene in a gruesome death.
Police have reported that Mr. Balthaser was responsible for Ms. Rohrbach’s death as he was operating the motorcycle with reckless and irresponsible behavior. In addition to operating the motorcycle under the influence, he did not have a license to operate a motorcycle and the permit he carried did not allow him to drive at night with a passenger. He faces manslaughter and homicide by a vehicle charges as a result of the accident.
The accident happened with Mr. Balthaser made an errant move on a curve on Mill Creek Road. This error caused the motorcycle to jump two concrete islands, the second throwing Ms. Rohrbach off the motorcycle where she was dragged for a distance and then hit a sign post.
Mr. Balthaser’s bail has been set at $100,000 and he is being held at the Lehigh County Jail.
